It usually passed fairly quickly. ( sort of liked how it smelled if it wasn't too thick. We were up on a hill and it wasn't coming our way too much. As far as the reenacters, well, I dunno. Their choice.

This image really looks as ocurred in those times, the sepia is a perfect choice.
